Water is your most urgent survival need. You can survive three weeks without food — but only three days without water, and far less in extreme heat. In an emergency, municipal water supplies can become contaminated or cut off entirely. Knowing how to find and purify water could be the most important survival skill you ever learn.
How Water Becomes Unsafe
Water sources that appear clean can harbor bacteria, viruses, parasites, and chemical contaminants. After a flood, earthquake, or infrastructure failure, even your tap water may be unsafe to drink without treatment. Never assume water is safe because it looks clear.
The Four Main Purification Methods
1. Boiling
Boiling is the most reliable method for killing biological contaminants. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute (three minutes at elevations above 6,500 feet). Boiling does not remove chemical contaminants or heavy metals, but it eliminates virtually all pathogens.
Best for: Any situation where you have fire and a container.
Limitations: Requires fuel and time. Does not remove chemicals or sediment.
2. Filtration
Portable water filters use physical barriers — typically hollow fiber membranes — to remove bacteria, protozoa, and sediment. High-quality filters like those using 0.1-micron technology remove 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa.
Best for: Backcountry water sources like streams and lakes.
Limitations: Most filters do not remove viruses (important in international travel or sewage-contaminated water).
3. Chemical Treatment
Iodine and chlorine tablets kill bacteria and viruses and are lightweight and inexpensive. They're ideal for a bug-out bag or emergency kit. Chlorine dioxide tablets are the most effective, treating bacteria, viruses, and Cryptosporidium.
Best for: Lightweight emergency kits and travel.
Limitations: Takes 30 minutes to 4 hours to work. Leaves a taste. Does not remove sediment.
4. UV Purification
Ultraviolet light uses UV-C light to destroy the DNA of pathogens, rendering them unable to reproduce. Fast and effective against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. For whole-home or high-volume water treatment, a dedicated UV sterilizer system is the gold standard.

In a serious emergency, don't rely on a single method. The most effective approach is to combine methods: filter first to remove sediment and large contaminants, then boil or chemically treat to kill remaining pathogens.
